How to Display Family Portraits in Your Home
I can’t start a post like this without first telling you how I got my start in family photography. I had just had my second child and I was a busy wedding photographer. One day, I sat my boys down in the backyard and snapped some images of them. They were sweet images of them holding hands, hugging and just being cuddly with each other. I sent them off to get printed. When the prints arrived in the mail I was blown away. There was something so wonderful about holding a printed photograph of my loving children in my hands. And with that, a seed was planted and I thought, “I need to put these kinds of images into my clients hands!”
And today, that is exactly what I find myself doing: Capturing images that reflect the joy of motherhood and putting them into my client’s homes. So with that, here are a few ways that you can enjoy displaying your family portraits in your home.
Albums + Print Boxes
Albums
Anyone old enough to remember flipping through your parent’s photo albums when you were a kid? One of the first keepsakes I made when we had our first child was an album. Albums are great because they can tell a story through photographs. Whether it be from a session, or a collection of stories such as images from a maternity, newborn, 6 month, and one year session. They are great to display on coffee tables and years later your kids will love flipping through them!
Albums come in a variety of cover options. I like to keep it simple so I offer a linen cover or a leather cover. All of my albums come from fine art professional album companies. Albums are something that I want to start offering more of in the coming months.
Print Boxes
Print boxes have become super popular over the years. I recently had one made from our personal family session. I absolutely loved receiving it in the mail. Our print box sits on our piano and every now and then I will get the box down and flip through the images, it’s so nostalgic. One of my clients buys print boxes every year for her session. I think it’s such a great idea because you can collect them and display them as decor in your home.
Framed Prints and Gallery Walls
Framed Prints
Framed prints are perfect for that wide open space in your home. Whether it be above a mantle, over a bed, or on an accent wall. They can be a focal point for any wall in your home. I offer both matted framed prints and regular framed prints. Most of my framed prints are made with non scratch acrylic covers. Though, if you’d like glass that is an option too. My favorite set up is at least 1” mat around the image followed by a natural wood frame. Frame colors that I offer include black, brown, natural wood, driftwood, and white. I like to keep the options simple and easy!
Gallery Walls
Gallery walls are so fun! Have you ever tried to create one before? They can be tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing. A simple Pinterest tutorial can help a ton though! Gallery walls are so great because you can start with a few of your favorite images from one session and just build it out year after year. How fun is that?!
Canvas Prints + Other Unique Print Options
Canvas Prints
These were really popular years ago but I think they are mostly going out of style. However, I still have a few clients who still buy them. (I’ve got one hanging up in my office!) I don’t know why they aren’t as popular anymore, because I LOVE canvas wrapped prints! I sell fine art canvas prints and the quality is insane. So good. I think something like this would be great in a playroom, nursery or family room.
Unique Print Options
Last but not least, another way to enjoy your portraits in your home is to print baby announcements, Christmas cards, graduation announcements, calendars and ornaments. I offer all of these in my online print store. And, every year for Christmas I make my parents a calendar with photos of my kids for each of the months. It’s a sweet way to enjoy family photos year round!
